Frances Sims Nicely, 96, formerly of Fowler, Indiana, died Thursday March 11, 2010, at her home in Danville, Indiana.

Born March 23, 1913 in Fayette, Ohio, she was the daughter of Francis M. Sims and Stella Jenkins Sims and a 1931 graduate of Antwerp Ohio High School. In 1936, she married Maurice Delos Nicely of Goodland, Indiana.

Fran was an elder in the Fowler Presbyterian Church. She and her husband Maury were owners of the Fowler IGA Store until 1964. She also owned and operated a custom sewing and alterations business in Fowler. Prior to moving to Fowler in 1956, she and her family were residents of Oxford, Indiana, for 17 years. She was co-owner of Nicely's Grocery and an insurance agency in Oxford.

A member of Benton County Country Club, Fran was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed bowling and bridge. She was an avid reader and an expert in English vocabulary and grammar. Fran possessed a keen intellect and maintained a lifelong interest in current events.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Nicely; daughter, Mary Josephine Nicely; three brothers and six sisters.

She is survived by a daughter Judith N. Main (James) of Danville, son Stephen M. Nicely (Karen) of Chattanooga, Tenn., and son Gregory P. Nicely (Donna) of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; five grandchildren: Kathy Wagley (Matt) of Danville, Allen Eberly (April) of Indianapolis, Maury Nicely (Jennifer), Matthew Nicely and Elizabeth Nicely of Chattanooga, Tenn.: five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be March 13 at 3 p.m. at Conkle Funeral Home, Avon Chapel with Reverend Karen Devaisher officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be Sunday, March 14 at 3 p.m. in Fowler Cemetery, Fowler, Indiana, with The Reverend Ann Williams of Fowler Presbyterian Church officiating.
